If you've been sourcing golf bags for any length of time, you've heard this complaint: the zipper broke after six months. The stitching held. The fabric held. The hardware looked fine. But the zipper — that small, overlooked detail — failed, and the whole bag became unusable.
Zipper failures account for a disproportionate share of quality returns in the golf bag category. Yet when buyers review samples or negotiate specifications, zippers are rarely discussed in detail. This guide is designed to change that.
Understanding Zipper Anatomy
A zipper consists of three main components: the chain (the interlocking teeth), the tape (the fabric strip the teeth are attached to), and the slider (the pull mechanism). Each component contributes to overall durability, and each can fail independently.
For golf bags specifically, the chain material matters most. The two dominant options are:

That said, YKK is not the only acceptable choice. SBS (a Chinese manufacturer) produces zippers that meet international quality standards and are widely used in mid-range golf bags. The key is to ask for the brand name and request test data.
Coil Size: The Specification Most Buyers Skip
Zipper coil size is measured by the width of the closed chain in millimeters. Common sizes for golf bags are:
- #5 coil: Standard for secondary pockets and accessories. Adequate for light use.
- #8 coil: Recommended for main compartments. Stronger pull resistance, less likely to separate under load.
- #10 coil: Heavy-duty applications, travel bags, or bags designed for frequent use.
A bag with a #5 coil on the main club opening will feel fine in the showroom but may fail within a season of regular use. Always specify minimum coil size in your purchase order.
Salt Spray Testing: The Standard You Should Know
For bags with metal hardware — including metal zippers, D-rings, and buckles — salt spray testing (also called salt fog testing, per ASTM B117 or ISO 9227) measures corrosion resistance. The test exposes hardware to a saline mist for a specified number of hours and evaluates rust formation.
For golf bags intended for coastal markets or humid climates, a minimum of 48 hours salt spray resistance is a reasonable baseline. Premium bags targeting year-round use in tropical or coastal environments should specify 96 hours or higher.
When requesting samples, ask your supplier for the salt spray test report on the hardware. This is a standard document in professional OEM manufacturing and should be readily available.
What to Ask Your Manufacturer Before Placing an Order

- What zipper brand and model number are you using for the main compartment? Request the specific brand, coil size, and slider type.
- Do you have a salt spray test report for the metal hardware? Ask for the test duration and result.
- What is the rated open/close cycle count for the main zipper? Quality zippers are rated for 500–1,000+ cycles. Ask for the specification.
- Can you show me the zipper tape attachment method? The tape should be bar-tacked at stress points, not just sewn in a single line.
