There is a lighthouse at the eastern edge of Nantucket Island that has guided sailors home for nearly two centuries. A few hundred yards inland, Sankaty Head Golf Club has been guiding golfers across its windswept links since 1921. When the club approached Links Sports Co to create a custom Sunday bag for its youngest members, we understood immediately that this was not simply a manufacturing brief. It was an invitation to become part of a story that had been unfolding for over a hundred years.

The Brief: Small Bag, Big Meaning

The request was straightforward in scope but precise in intention. Sankaty Head wanted a Sunday bag sized for junior golfers — children who were just beginning to learn the game on one of the most naturally beautiful courses in the northeastern United States. The bag needed to carry the club's emblem with dignity, feel light enough for a ten-year-old to carry across eighteen holes of genuine links terrain, and last long enough to become a keepsake rather than a consumable.

Three colorways were specified: Vintage Green, Blush Pink, and Sky Blue. Each color was chosen to reflect a different personality among the club's junior membership, while the shared construction would ensure that every child on the course carried something made to the same standard, regardless of which color they chose.

Material Selection: Why Wax Canvas and Full-Grain Leather

The choice of materials for this project was guided by the environment as much as by aesthetics. Sankaty Head sits on the Atlantic-facing bluff of Nantucket, where sea winds carry salt and moisture across the fairways even on clear summer days. A bag that looked beautiful in a showroom but deteriorated after a single season on these links would have been a failure, regardless of how well it was made.

We selected a 12-ounce wax canvas as the primary shell material. Wax canvas is a tightly woven cotton fabric treated with a paraffin-based wax compound that creates a naturally water-resistant surface without the synthetic feel of nylon or polyester. Unlike coated fabrics, wax canvas breathes — it does not trap moisture against its surface, which means the bag dries quickly after a morning round in heavy dew. Over time, wax canvas develops a patina that reflects use and care, becoming more characterful with each season rather than simply wearing out.

For the trim, handles, and base reinforcement, we used full-grain leather sourced from tanneries that process hides using vegetable-tanning methods. Full-grain leather retains the outermost layer of the hide, where the fiber structure is tightest and most durable. It is the same grade of leather used in high-quality saddlery and heritage luggage — materials designed to last decades, not seasons. Against the three canvas colorways, the natural tan of the vegetable-tanned leather creates a warmth that synthetic trim simply cannot replicate.

The club's emblem was applied using hand-stitched embroidery rather than heat-transfer printing or woven patches. Embroidery sits proud of the fabric surface, catching light in a way that gives the badge genuine presence on a small bag. For junior golfers who are still forming their relationship with the game, carrying a bag that visibly bears their club's crest — stitched by hand, not stamped by machine — communicates something important about the value of belonging to a place with history.

Construction Details

The bag was designed with a single full-length divider to separate woods from irons, keeping the load balanced for smaller frames. The strap system uses a padded single-shoulder design with an adjustable buckle that can accommodate a child as young as eight and grow with them through their early teens. The base is reinforced with a molded rubber foot that protects the canvas when the bag is set down on wet grass or gravel paths.

Interior pockets were kept minimal by design — a zippered valuables pocket lined in microsuede, and a single open pocket for tees and a scorecard. Junior golfers do not need the organizational complexity of a full-size tour bag. They need a bag that is easy to open, easy to close, and easy to carry without thinking about it, so that their attention can stay on the game.

Three Colors, One Standard

Vintage Green was the first colorway completed and the one that most directly references Sankaty Head's links heritage — the color of the rough in late summer, when the fescue has dried to a warm olive tone. Blush Pink was developed for members who wanted something that stood apart from the traditional palette of golf equipment without sacrificing the bag's sense of craft. Sky Blue references the particular quality of light over Nantucket Sound on a clear morning, a color that anyone who has played Sankaty Head will recognize immediately.

All three colorways use the same wax canvas weight, the same leather grade, and the same embroidery thread count. The only difference is the color of the canvas itself. This was a deliberate decision: every junior member of Sankaty Head Golf Club should carry a bag that was made with identical care, regardless of which color they chose.

A Bag Built to Last

When we delivered the first production run to Sankaty Head, the club's junior coordinator noted that several of the children had already named their bags. That is, perhaps, the most accurate measure of whether a piece of equipment has been made well — not a technical specification or a quality control report, but the fact that a child has decided it belongs to them.
